Across the Devil's Belt, Part 1
Across the Devil's Belt, A Biography of William Smith Scudder, was written by Mary Endres and published by the Scudder Association in 1991.
Presentend here in three parts.
From the forward by the author:
The American Revolution was traumatic for everyone who lived through it, including William Smith Scudder, who was such a dedicated patriot.
This book is intended primarily as his biography, but necessarily includes an abbreviated history of the war itself. William Smith Scudder lived through all the events given, participated in many and was always aware of events going on, even those outside his personal sphere.
A liberal use of contemporary quotations has been made. It is hoped that reading the comments of contemporaries will make clear how the people felt and suffered during the war for independence.
